The Ramsey County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint Jack Serier as sheriff. He’ll serve out the remaining two years of the term of Matt Bostrom, who retired as sheriff last week.
Ramsey County Chief Judge John Guthmann administered the oath of office to Serier immediately after the board confirmed his appointment. Serier was most recently the sheriff’s office chief deputy.

With Bostrom’s retirement, the county commissioners were required to appoint a new sheriff until the next election in November 2018. The board had considered accepting applications for the job, but ultimately decided to only interview Serier for it.
After the interview last Tuesday, commissioners agreed that Serier should be sheriff. He is the county’s 22nd sheriff.
“I see my role as the sheriff for the next two years to continue to operationalize the vision of Sheriff Bostrom, to build a strong agency of character that knows how to work appropriately with other law enforcement and government agencies … and continue to build bridges of trust with diverse communities,” Serier said during last week’s public interview.
Serier has worked in law enforcement for 26 years, with the last six years at the Ramsey County sheriff’s office. He was previously an officer at the Stillwater, Eagan and St. Paul police departments. Serier has a doctorate in leadership, policy and administration from the University of St. Thomas.
