A body pulled from the Mississippi River on Wednesday has been identified as that of a missing University of Minnesota student.
David Michael Miller, 20, of St. Peter, Minn., had been missing since May 10. He was last seen leaving Roy Wilkins Hall at 1212 University Avenue S.E. on the school’s East Bank at about 9 p.m.
The university issued a statement Thursday evening expressing condolences to Miller’s family, friends and classmates in the College of Biological Sciences.
“This is a difficult and sad time for our University community,” Danita Brown Young, vice provost for student affairs and dean of students, said in the statement. “David will be missed by many.”
The school thanked the several agencies that helped search for Miller and said counselors would be available for students and staff.
A boater spotted Miller’s body around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday in the river between Ford Parkway and the Marshall Avenue-Lake Street bridge, a few miles downstream from the U. It was recovered by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, with help from other agencies.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner released the identity Thursday. The cause and manner of Miller’s death remain under investigation.
