A St. Paul man is heading to prison after shooting a 16-year-old boy and a 40-year-old man outside an American Legion last spring.

Jaquel Laray Crutchfield, 23, was sentenced in Ramsey County District Court this week to just more than three years in prison on one count of first-degree assault that caused great bodily harm.
He was previously charged with attempted second-degree murder as well as two counts of second-degree assault in the incident, which took place April 30, 2016, outside the Arcade-Phalen American Legion.
The attempted murder charge and one of the second-degree assault counts were dismissed as part of a deal reached with prosecutors.
A birthday party was taking place at the establishment before a fight drew a crowd outside the building, according to the criminal complaint in the case.
Crutchfield fired into the crowd, striking both the teen and the 40-year-old man in the legs. Both were taken to Regions Hospital and survived.
The older victim needed surgery to repair his femur.
Crutchfield told police after the shooting that he and a man who was with him were both Selby Side gang members, the complaint said. Some people in the crowd outside the American Legion were East Side gang members.
Crutchfield has two prior felony convictions for reckless discharge of a firearm and burglary in the third-degree. He also has a juvenile adjudication for aggravated robbery in the first degree, which bars him from possessing a firearm, according to the complaint.
