A man died early Wednesday after a shooting in St. Paul’s North End on Tuesday night, police said.
Officers were called to the 300 block of Burgess Street about 10:30 p.m. on a report of shots fired. They found evidence of a shooting outside a home, but found no victims.
A few minutes later, a private vehicle pulled up to Regions Hospital and someone dropped off a man who had an apparent gunshot wound. The man received medical attention, but he died early Wednesday, police said.
“Homicide investigators are working hard to determine the facts of this incident, interviewing witnesses and trying to determine what led to this shooting,” said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a St. Paul police spokesman.
No one had been arrested in the homicide as of Wednesday morning. Police ask anyone with information to call 651-266-5650.
A woman on the block heard three shots, but she thinks more were fired. A nearby house not connected to the case was struck by bullets, according to the woman, who saw police collecting evidence from the home’s back concrete wall, as well as in the backyard.
“I think they were probably fighting out front and one ran and jumped the fence into the backyard,” said the woman, who declined to give her name.
The woman said she’s lived in her home for five years, knows her neighbors and feels safe. She said she had not heard gunfire on the block before, though there was an incident last month of shots being fired down the street and bullets going through the window of a home.
In that case, a woman said she woke up to four gunshots about midnight in early April. Two bullets had gone through a first-floor window of the home and out another window. No one was injured.
In the shooting on Tuesday night, a Facebook post from Police Clips indicated that police received a shots-fired report at 10:30 p.m. on Burgess Street; yelling was reported, along with a vehicle leaving the area. A male with a gunshot wound arrived at Regions about 10:40 p.m. and Police Clips, which gathers news from emergency radio dispatches, reported that the shooting victim was unconscious and not breathing.
Police said they would release the name of the man who died after the Ramsey County medical examiner’s office confirms his identity. The case is the 10th homicide of the year in St. Paul.
