A pedestrian was apparently run down by a motorist before being assaulted in St. Paul’s Payne-Phalen neighborhood on Monday afternoon, police say.
The 37-year-old man was struck by the driver of an SUV near the intersection of Arkwright Street and Rose Avenue about 2:45 p.m., said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a St. Paul police spokesman. A passenger in the SUV then got out and assaulted the victim, who was transported to Regions Hospital with serious injuries, Ernster said.
Based on preliminary information, investigators believe the victim was intentionally run down by the driver. There was a feud on Sunday between the victim and the people in the vehicle, Ernster said Tuesday.
Police located the SUV near the scene, but the driver had apparently fled, Ernster said. Officers also arrested a 22-year-old man near the scene, whom they suspect committed the subsequent assault, he said.
Investigators are working to determine what led to the incident and to identify the driver of the SUV, Ernster said.
