A former White Bear Lake chiropractor was sentenced to more than seven years in prison for conning a group of friends and patients, according to the Minnesota Department of Commerce.

Randy Miland, 63, told his 10 investors he would use their money for legitimate investments. In reality, he was using the money to pay personal expenses, including restitution payments to victims of prior scams, the agency said in a statement Wednesday.

Between 2010 and 2014, he stole or attempted to steal more than $500,000 from the investors, authorities said.

“Randy Miland is a con man and serial fraudster who lied to and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars from his friends and chiropractic patients,” said Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson in the statement.

Miland was convicted in 1999 of theft by swindle and sentenced to four years and seven months in a Minnesota prison. In 2006, he was convicted in federal court of real estate investment fraud and sentenced to three years and five months prison.

Miland was ordered to pay more than $1.5 million in restitution in the 1999 case and more than $250,000 for his 2006 conviction. He still owes about $124,000 from 2006 case and nearly all of the amount from 1999.

As for the most recent case, he was sentenced Tuesday to 90 months, or seven years and six months prison, and was ordered to pay $214,517 in restitution. He pleaded guilty last fall to mail fraud and money laundering.

The Minnesota Board of Chiropractic Examiners revoked Miland’s license in 2015.
