One man was shot after he and another allegedly fired on officers early Monday in southeastern Minnesota.

The state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting, which happened about 1:30 a.m. after two police officers spotted two men “behaving suspiciously” at a gas station-store in La Crescent. The men left in a vehicle and police gave chase, pulling them over several miles away in Hokah, Minn.

That’s when the suspects and officers exchanged fire, at the intersection of two highways in the small town, according to a statement from the BCA. The suspects drove off, and officers again pursued.

After several miles, the suspects’ vehicle crashed into a bean field off Minnesota 44 northwest of Caledonia. The suspects ran into the field but eventually surrendered, the BCA said.

One of the suspects was taken by ambulance to a La Crosse, Wis., hospital, where he was treated and then booked into the La Crosse County jail on probable cause attempted murder, the BCA statement said.

The second suspect, who was not injured, was booked into the Houston County jail on probable cause attempted murder.

Neither officer was injured, and both are on standard administrative leave, the BCA said.

La Crescent police do not use body cameras, but squad car cameras captured video of the shooting, the BCA said.

The BCA investigates officer-involved shootings, and the statement said the agency would forward its findings to the Houston County attorney’s office to review for charges.
