A street robbery in St. Paul ended with a 42-year-old man being shot last week.
The man was waiting for a ride from his niece in the Summit-University neighborhood when a stranger approached. The suspect asked him a question and suddenly showed him a handgun, demanding his valuables at Concordia Avenue and Milton Street at about 8 p.m. Thursday, said Sgt. Mike Ernster, a St. Paul police spokesman.
The man grabbed the robber’s gun and pushed it down. During the struggle over the weapon, the gun went off and a bullet went through the man’s hand and into his leg, Ernster said. The would-be robber ran away without getting anything.
The man’s niece arrived and drove him to Regions Hospital, where he was treated for injuries that weren’t life-threatening, Ernster said.
The robber is described as a black man, 20 to 22 years old, 5 feet 7 inches tall with a muscular build. He was wearing a black T-shirt with a diamond pattern on the front, and dark pants. Police ask anyone with information to call them at 651-266-5650.
