A Minneapolis police officer has been charged with sexually abusing the 16-year-old girlfriend of his teenage son.

According to the Hennepin County attorney’s office, David Edward Campbell, 58, of Bloomington was charged Tuesday with five counts of criminal sexual conduct and one count of terroristic threats.

According to the criminal complaint, Campbell’s 17-year-old son and his girlfriend told Bloomington police that the officer had been sexually abusing her.

The girl had been living with her boyfriend and his family, including Campbell and his wife, at locations in Bloomington.

Beginning in February, the complaint said, Campbell asked the girl her bra size and bought her lace bras and underwear. He also told her to take photos of herself in the underwear and send them to his phone.

The complaint said that Campbell eventually exposed himself to the girl, touched her breasts and genitals, and threatened to shoot her in the head if she told anyone.

Some of the incidents allegedly occurred while Campbell was on duty, when he would take the girl on ride-alongs in his squad car.

Campbell is expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday.

The Minneapolis Police Department said that newly installed Chief Medaria Arradondo acted Monday to relieve Campbell of duty without pay.

“I will continue to review these charges, and any additional information that should arise from this investigation,” Arradondo said in a Tuesday statement. “Let it be known that the allegations, if found to be true, would violate the very values and ethics that the MPD stands for. As I recently and clearly stated in my vision for the department, if an MPD employee breaches the public trust or brings contempt to the department and the badge we wear, they have forfeited their opportunity to serve on our department.”
