A University of Minnesota economics professor was sentenced Monday to one year in the Hennepin County workhouse for tax evasion.

Beth E. Allen, 65, pleaded guilty in July to failing to file income tax returns from 2010 to 2015, according to a news release issued by Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. Allen was also sentenced to two years of probation.

“We are satisfied with the outcome,” Freeman said in the news release. “It doesn’t matter if you are a tax preparer, a truck driver or an economics professor, if you don’t pay your taxes, we are going to prosecute you. It is everyone’s duty to pay taxes, not just some people.”

In addition to the $100,000 in back taxes she has already paid, Allen will be required to pay nearly $11,000 in restitution to the state of Minnesota.

During her sentencing on Monday afternoon, Allen expressed remorse and said she would file her income taxes in the future, the news release said.
