A Stillwater man was shot in St. Paul early Friday before he crashed his car into a tree, according to police.

Paramedics took the 43-year-old man to Regions Hospital with injuries that are believed to not be life-threatening, said Steve Linders, a St. Paul police spokesman.

Shortly after 2 a.m. Friday, officers responded to a report of a crash with injuries near Grand Avenue and Dale Street. They found the driver unconscious, covered in blood and slumped over, according to a police incident report. He had crashed head-on into a tree, Linders said.

Officers saw the driver had what appeared to be bullet wounds, and paramedics took him to Regions Hospital.

The man had been shot in the abdomen and arm. He told officers he was shot near a school, “but wasn’t forthcoming with any further information and became uncooperative,” Linders said.

Police found drug paraphernalia in the man’s car, Linders said.

The location of the shooting has not been determined and no arrests have been made.
