A Brooklyn Center man now faces murder charges after the victim of a Labor Day shooting in downtown Minneapolis died over the weekend.
The Hennepin County attorney’s office says Sherman Alexander, 31, is now charged with three counts of murder in the death of Jenna Rae Heilman, 28, of Minneapolis. Alexander is also charged with one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Heilman, who had been in critical condition since the shooting, died Saturday due to complications related to her injuries.
According to the criminal complaint:
Just before 2 am. on Sept. 5, an off-duty Minneapolis police officer working at the Pourhouse bar in downtown Minnepaolis heard gunshots from the surface lot at Fifth Street and Hennepin Avenue.
He saw Alexander shooting. The officer chased Alexander and arrested him.
Heilman and her boyfriend were inside the Pourhouse when an argument over a liquor bottle ensued with Alexander’s group.
Heilman and her boyfriend left the bar and were getting into their car when she was shot.
Alexander has been in custody since the shooting. The prosecution is requesting bail of $1 million.
Meanwhile, Minneapolis police have identified two people fatally shot in cars on the city’s North Side in recent days.
Police responded to reports of gunshots about 11 p.m. Friday and found 46-year-old Dana Logan in a car near at 36th and Queen avenues suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. She later died at a hospital.
Her family told news media that she was a bystander who became caught up in a shooting.
About 5 a.m. Saturday, officers responded to a report of a man slumped over inside a car and found 31-year-old Richard Ambers dead at the scene in the 4800 block of Bryant Avenue North.
Both shootings remain under investigation.
